Chapter 4

"That was not the deal," Aurora said again, and turned to leave. Her gold light bent the snow to amber. Glimmer knew that if she walked, every cache walked with her. No shell. No safe way to hold his sparks. He would touch the next story and ruin it, the way he ruined the hunters' tale. He had to make her stay. He sneezed. The three of them dropped onto red dirt under a wide sky. Heat pressed down. A fire burned in a ring of stones, its shape somehow older and newer at once. Around it sat people who had told the same stories for tens of thousands of years. They sang lines that mapped the land itself. Rivers, ridges, waterholes, all held in the song. Glimmer felt the pull to reach for it. He kept his hands flat against his legs. "Watch," he told Aurora. "Just watch. Don't hand me anything." Aurora crossed her arms. But she stayed. The singing rose. A spark broke from Glimmer's collar and drifted toward the flames. He did not move. If it landed, the song would change, and these people would carry the wrong land forever. Aurora's hand shot out. Gold folded into a shell. The spark bent and vanished inside. The seal closed. The fire held. The song went on, unbroken. Liora watched the whole thing. "You baited her," she said. "You brought her somewhere she couldn't stand to lose." "I brought her somewhere real," Glimmer said. "She caught it because she wanted to. Not for me." Aurora stared at the singers. Her flat voice cracked once. "I spread glitter over dead stars. Empty places." She nodded at the fire. "This is not empty. If your spark touches it, it's gone. The real one." "Then help me keep it," Glimmer said. Aurora held the shell against her chest, the spark trapped inside. A tiny mammoth trotted past her feet, the one Glimmer had made by accident, still following him. She looked at it. She looked at the singers who had lost nothing. "New deal," she said. "I come. Not for your sparks. For the stories. The day you get careless, I stop catching. I let one land. You watch what you do to them." Glimmer swallowed. "Agreed." "I mean it," Aurora said. "I'll show you the wreck you make. Once." The song ended. The people banked the fire. Glimmer stood with the songline locked in his head and the ground untouched. He had kept Aurora. He had kept his access. But he had traded away his safety net. Now every trip carried a hidden fail-switch, and Aurora held it. Liora picked up the mammoth. "She's not your shield anymore," she said. "She's your judge." Glimmer looked at the shell in Aurora's hand. One careless spark, and she would let it burn a story to prove her point. He had his escort. He had his caches. He no longer had a way to be wrong for free.
