Chapter 7

Glimmer sneezed the three of them into a roar. Rome, 80 CE. Titus's new arena rose around them, packed with screaming people. Two gladiators fought on the sand below. Glimmer felt the story rise at once, hot and wide. This was not one boast. Two fighters, matched, refusing to fall. The crowd's hunger. The emperor's silence. Many threads, all pulling loose sparks from his hands. He reached. Four sparks broke free, not one. They scattered toward the sand, the fighters, the wooden benches. His single decoy trick was useless. One rat could catch one spark. Not four. "Aurora," he said. "Too many." Aurora already knew. She swept gold from both hands. It did not harden into rats this time. It spread into a ring of stones on the empty step beside them. Logs stacked inside. Flame rose from the center, warm and steady. A campfire, old as any hunter's night, its stones shifting to fit the era. "A hearth," she said. "Sparks want fire. Give them one that isn't the story." Glimmer stared. "It pulls all of them?" "It's fire. They're fire. Aim the crowd of them at the flame." She did not soften it. "Miss, and you burn Rome's sand into your record forever." Liora crouched by the hearth. Her tiny mammoth climbed onto a stone and warmed its shaggy side. "Don't aim each one," Liora said. "Aim the whole handful. Like throwing sand at a wall." Below, both fighters dropped their shields at once. Neither would kill. The crowd screamed for a winner. The emperor sat still, refusing to break the tie. That was the story's center, the choice held open. Glimmer felt it swell. Six sparks now, then eight, breaking loose as he pulled. He did not chase them. He pushed them together, one shove, aiming the whole scatter at the hearth's flame. The sparks swerved. They streamed into the fire like moths. The flame flared blue, then gold, then settled. The sand below stayed clean. The fighters stayed whole. No scorch touched the arena. The story lifted into Glimmer's mind, unharmed. Two palms raised. Two prizes given. Both men winning, the tie unbroken. He held it, and nothing bent. He looked at his hands. Whole. No smoke. "Many at once," he said. "I sent them all." "One target for the whole scatter," Aurora said. "Not one for each." She let the fire sink back into gold. "You can reach a crowded story now." Liora lifted the mammoth off the cooling stone. "So the big one's next," she said. She did not name it. She did not have to. Glimmer knew. The Library of Alexandria burned with a thousand threads at once. Until now, a crowded story would have scattered him past saving. Now he had a way to hold the whole scatter. The last door had opened. He could reach for the fire he wanted most.
