Goodie reached into her basket and pulled out three jars of honey. Each jar glowed from within, warm and gold. She set them on the tea tables. Light spilled across the saucers. Guests smiled and lifted their cups again. But the edges of the raft stayed dark. Millicent frowned at the shadows beyond the rope. Goodie whistled a soft note into the night. Moths drifted in on pale wings. They perched along the raft's rim, shimmering blue and gold, a ring of gentle lanterns holding back the dark. Still the center of the raft sat dim. Then a hush fell. A child made of starlight stepped onto the boards. Her hair rippled with tiny suns. Her dress poured light across the tea things. The whole raft brightened like morning. Goodie pressed a hand to her mouth. The party glowed. Every guest could see every cup, even the chipped one. Night had come, and she had answered it. The tea poured on.
