Chapter 1

Graffita Neova painted a green stripe on the wall, and the man walking past made a sound like tearing paper. She turned. He shrank. His shadow-body pulled inward, thinning to a thread, then to nothing. The alley held only her, her cans, and the wet green mark. She had wanted to give him color. Instead she had erased him. This was the shadow-city. Everyone here was made of darkness. They walked fast and kept their eyes down. Graffita was different. Neon ink blots covered her skin, one for each drop that struck her the night the batch went wrong. She had thought the color was beautiful even as it burned. She still did. She wanted to spread that beauty across every wall until the whole city glowed with one living mural, her own signature written large. But the people could not bear it. Bright color hit them like a blade. She had watched three others thin and vanish that week. Her gift was killing the very people she wanted to reach. She walked until she reached the frozen tower streaked with dripping paint, its top crowned with old graffiti cans. Icicles hung from every ledge. She pressed her wrist against the cold brick. The oldest blot lived there, on her left wrist, darker than all the rest. Nearly black. She had always hated how dull it looked beside the others. Now she stared at it. The people were made of darkness. They fled from brightness. But a dark color was still color. She scraped frost from a fallen can and shook it. Then she painted a single line on the tower, not neon, but the deep near-black of her wrist. The line barely showed against the stone. She waited. A figure came down the path, head bowed. Graffita's chest tightened. She almost stepped in front of the mark to hide it. She didn't. The figure passed the dark line. It did not flinch. It slowed. It stopped. A thin hand rose and touched the paint. The figure stayed whole. "It's warm," the stranger said. Graffita's hands shook. She painted another line beside the first, a shade lighter. The stranger leaned closer, not away. A second figure drifted over. Then a third. They gathered at the tower and pressed their palms to the near-black paint, and none of them thinned. She understood now. She could not begin with the brightest color. She had to start in the dark and climb toward light, one shade at a time, slow enough that their eyes could follow. By the time she left, six figures stood at the tower, touching the wall. One of them had picked up a can. Graffita looked at her wrist. The dark blot did not seem dull anymore. It was the door. And she finally knew how to walk the city through it.
