Chapter 10

The wall was hers now. Graffita stood before the white stone at dawn. The old red and black spill dried at its base, mid-drip, from the last artist who'd tried. She had freed people in cramped dark passages. She had painted lines the width of her hand. But this wall rose three stories, wider than any surface she'd touched. She had no ink left in her wrist. And one bright line here could gray a whole district and end Chromus's fragile trust. A voice came from behind her. "You painted this bad the first time." Morphy stepped out of the passage shadow. He was one of the freed figures, the dream painter she'd pulled from behind the red door. Paint spotted his bare feet, pink and green. He looked at the wall, not at her. "Too bright, too fast," he said. "That's how districts die." "I know how to climb the shades," Graffita said. "Dark first. Slow. I just can't fill something this big. I've got nothing left." Morphy set a bent cluster of spray cans at her feet. Neon pink, orange, green, marked with black handprints. "Found these where the last artist dropped them." He shook one. It rattled full. "You start dark. I hold the top light back until it's safe." Graffita understood. She could paint the low dark bands with her method. But she couldn't reach the high wall or move fast enough alone. Morphy could pull the finished dark shape out of her mind and set it down as a real thing, layer by layer, no misstep. "If you rush me," she said, "a district drains." "I don't rush," Morphy said. He stopped there. She took the darkest can and laid the first band across the dried spill. Not bright. A dull, near-black gray. She pictured the next shade in her mind, a fraction lighter. Morphy pressed his palm to the stone. The shape lifted out of her thought and settled onto the wall exactly, clean and even, higher than she could reach. They climbed together. Dark to less dark. Each band a small step. Graffita held the neon cans back, capped, waiting. Below in the street, a shadow-person passed. He slowed. He looked up at the rising gray-to-soft-blue climb. He did not flinch. He did not fade. By full light they reached the top third. There Graffita finally uncapped the pink. She laid one narrow bright edge along the crown, where the dark had built high enough to hold it. The color held. No gray spread. No one vanished. Chromus came at midday. He stood in the street and looked up at the filled wall, dark below, bright only at the very top. He touched the black dripping at his cheek. "The district's still speaking," he said. "You filled it and nothing died." "It works at scale," Graffita said. "Then paint the next wall," Chromus said. "But a district went gray this morning. Across the city. Not from you."
