Chapter 1

Gram Alder wanted a beast at his side, and he could not even find one. Three winters he had chased the same story. Somewhere in Icefall's deep woods lived a creature no man had tamed. Trappers called it the fiercest thing in the forest. Gram believed a wild thing could be won with patience, not chains. He had tracked its rumors from tavern to trail. He had never once laid eyes on it. He knelt in wet leaves and pushed his blond hair from his face. Fresh claw marks scored a spruce trunk, high above his head. Big. But the tracks below vanished into a stream, and the trail died there like every trail before it. He had followed a dozen dead ends into this valley. He was running out of woods to search. Gram sat back on his heels and studied the ground. Something did not belong. Under a shelf of moss and roots, a corner of dark wood showed through. He dug with his fingers and pulled it loose. A strongbox, old and heavy, wrapped in vines and crusted with green moss. Someone had buried it here and meant it to stay hidden. The lock had rusted through. Gram struck it twice with a stone and the lid gave. Inside lay two things. A single flower, its petals glowing faint blue in the shade, cool and alive against his palm. And beneath it, a compass, its brass case carved all over with small beasts. He lifted it and the needle swung hard. It did not point north. It pulled sideways, toward the ridge above the stream, and held there, steady and sure. Gram turned in a slow circle to test it. The needle never wavered. Wherever he faced, it dragged back to the same dark line of trees. His pulse jumped. This was no ordinary compass. It hunted something. And he already knew what. He closed the lid on the flower and stood. The glowing bloom had a soft, healing look, and he tucked it in his coat, sure he would need it. Then he held the compass flat in his hand and let it lead. It pulled him up the ridge, away from the dead stream, toward ground no trapper's story had ever named. By dusk the needle began to shake. Gram slowed. The trees thinned around a wide clearing, and the air turned rank with musk. Something breathed in the dark ahead, deep and slow, larger than any bear. Two eyes caught the last light and burned like coals. He had spent three winters searching for the beast. Now the beast was thirty feet away, and it had seen him first. Gram stood still, the compass humming in his fist, and understood his real problem had only just begun. Finding it was easy. He had brought no plan for what came next.
