Chapter 3

The wind came down off the peak and cut through Gram's flannel. He crouched in the rock crack, flower in hand, and watched the tiger's eye watch him. His fingers had gone stiff. He could not feel his boots. The stone at his back held no warmth. He knew the truth now. He would freeze before the beast ever trusted him. Cold, not the tiger, was the thing that would kill him first. Then the flower's light shifted. Two small shapes crept from the cave mouth. Cubs. Their fur burned soft orange, sparks trailing off their tails. They stumbled onto the ledge and stared at the blue glow. One mewled. The sound was thin and hungry. Gram's mind turned fast. Hungry cubs. If he fed them, the mother might soften. And they would need warmth as much as he did. He dug into his coat and pulled out the last strips of dried venison from his hunting pouch. He held one flat on his palm beside the flower. The bolder cub padded closer. Its heat rolled off it in waves. Gram's cold fingers ached at the touch of that warmth. The cub sniffed the meat, then took it. Its small body pressed against his hand. He did not pull back. He let the heat sink into his skin. The second cub came too. Gram fed it. Both cubs crowded into the crack beside him, drawn by the flower and the food. Their flame-fur gave off real heat, like a banked fire. Gram's shivering slowed. He tucked them against his chest and felt his blood move again. A low sound rolled from the cave. The mother stepped out onto the ledge. Fire rippled along her back. She saw her cubs pressed to the stranger. Her muscles bunched. Gram froze, one hand on each warm cub, the flower still glowing between them. He did not run. He could not have run. He held still and let her look. The cubs did not cry or pull away. They stayed warm against him, eating from his open hand. The tiger's coal eyes moved from her cubs to the man to the blue light. She took one slow step. Then she stopped. She lay down at the cave mouth. Not close. Not far. She kept her eyes on Gram and the cubs, and she waited. The heat of the cubs kept him alive through the dark. He did not sleep. He watched the mother watch him, and he learned the shape of her patience. By first gray light, the cold had broken. Gram was alive. The cubs still slept against his ribs. But the mother stood now, and her low growl was not for the cubs. She wanted them back. Gram had won the night with her young in his arms, and now he had to give them up without breaking the fragile trust that had kept him warm.
