Chapter 1

Grand Pete found the child soul at the edge of the road, and it hissed at him. He had spent longer than most kingdoms drifting these roads, hunting dim lights. This one was not dim. It was black. A small demon-fairy, no bigger than his palm, with soot wings and teeth. Her soul burned with pure spite. Most wisps would have passed her by. Grand Pete slowed his glow and drifted closer. He had been a lost soul once. A stranger stopped for him when no one should have. That one act shaped his whole long life, and now he does the same. "You smell like kindness," the demon-fairy spat. "I eat kindness." "Good," Grand Pete said. "You'll have plenty." He carried her back to his mansion, where the other children waited on the wide front porch. These were the ones he had already taken in. The ones others called evil. He did not try to erase what they were. He had learned that trick long ago. You cannot heal a soul by killing its nature. You heal it by turning the nature toward love. Inside, La'Gaia Bloom filled half the great room. The giant green beluga whale hovered low, her flower-petal wings fanning soft warm air. She had come to help. "Hold her still," La'Gaia said, blunt as a stone. A thread. Every living thing has one." Her petals brushed the demon-fairy's chest. The child shrieked, then went quiet. Ella Love knelt beside them. The fairy sage pressed one finger to the demon-fairy's heart. "I see her center," Ella said. "Her magic is poison. We don't remove it. We aim it." Grand Pete nodded. He fed his own inner light into the small black soul, slow and steady, the way the stranger once did for him. The demon-fairy's spite did not vanish. It bent. Her soot wings glowed red at the edges. She lifted one clawed hand toward a wilting plant near the window, hissed her dark spell, and the plant stood up green and whole. Her evil magic now healed. She stared at her own hands, shaking. "I'm still me," she whispered. "You're still you," Grand Pete said. "Just pointed the right way." One by one the children lit up. A shadow girl bent her dark magic to mend a broken toy. Each held a healed light inside now, kindled from Grand Pete's own glow. They gathered at the long table for a feast of lightfood, plates that shone like trapped sunrise. Even Key Love came, the little betta fish fairy with golden braids. She ate, and some grey in her fins turned pink. "Colors," Key Love breathed. "They're coming back. They're coming back." Grand Pete watched them eat and felt full. Then a cold wind pushed the door open. On the porch sat a leafpile no one had gathered, and on top of it lay another child soul, dimmer than any he had seen. Not evil. Fading. His work was not done.
