Grey walked the streets at dawn, mapping his territory. Three miles north, the buildings turned to warehouses—big spaces with loading docks and metal doors. Good places to corner prey. Two miles east, narrow alleys twisted between apartments where sound carried at night. Perfect for driving mice into traps. South, he found a junkyard with chain-link fencing and one exit. He marked each location in his notebook with simple notes: "dead end," "echo zone," "cage." A hunter needed to know where prey would run before the chase began. By noon, he understood this territory like the inside of his own skull. But knowledge alone wouldn't build his reputation. The mice needed to see something that proved no beast was beyond his reach. Grey thought about the bison he'd killed three months back—twelve hundred pounds of muscle and rage. The taxidermist had done standard work, but standard wasn't enough anymore. He needed something that would make people's breath catch in their throats. Grey spent the next week rebuilding the bison into something worse than death. He twisted the horns until they spiraled like a nightmare. Added teeth where teeth shouldn't grow. Changed the eyes to reflect light in ways that made people look away. When he finished, the creature didn't look like it came from this world. It looked like something that hunted in places where screaming did no good. He positioned it where the most foot traffic passed. Within an hour, the first group stopped to stare. A man pointed at the twisted horns and stepped back. A woman covered her mouth and walked faster. Grey watched from across the way, breathing in that sharp, metallic smell that drifted on the wind. The message was clear now: if he could kill something this terrifying, what chance did anything else have? The territory's most feared hunter needed to prove he conquered the territory's fiercest beasts. Now every mouse who passed would see that proof and know the truth.
