Chapter 1

Grok stood over the body and didn't move. The man was clan — same tattoos, same trade beads woven into his belt. Dead maybe an hour, throat cut clean. The road stretched empty in both directions, but Grok's skin prickled. Someone was close. Someone watching. He crouched. The necklace around the dead man's throat caught his eye — small bones threaded with bright flowers, the kind the clan women made for traders heading out. His own neck had worn one once. Grok's hands trembled as he checked the body for wounds, for signs of who did this. Nothing useful. Just blood and silence. He straightened and turned his back to the trees, moving slow and steady toward the road's far edge. Whoever was watching would either show themselves or let him go. Either way, he needed to reach the clan now — this killing meant trouble, and trouble meant questions, and questions meant he'd never get close to the old healer woman who knew the herb work that could stop his shaking hands. He kept walking. A figure stepped out from behind the cavern entrance where the road curved into the swamp. Young. Armed. The watcher's face was half-hidden by shadow and hanging vines, but Grok saw the clan marks on his forearm. The young man didn't draw his blade. He just stood there, blocking the path forward, eyes moving from Grok to the body and back again. Grok stopped twenty paces out and raised both hands, palms open, showing he held no weapon. The tremor in his fingers was visible even from that distance. The young man saw it too — Grok watched his expression shift from suspicion to something harder to read. Then the watcher turned and disappeared into the green darkness beyond the cavern mouth, leaving the road open. Grok had been seen, recognized, and allowed to pass. That changed everything. Grok moved past the cavern mouth and didn't look back at the body. The watcher had let him go, but word would spread. The clan would know he was close before sunset. He scanned the water's edge as he walked, noting the giant lily pads that dotted the shallows — each one large enough to hide a crouching man. More watchers could be anywhere. His original plan to slip in during trade day was finished. They knew he was coming now, knew he'd been near their dead, knew his hands shook like an old man's. He had maybe two days before they decided what to do about it. Two days to find the healer or vanish back into exile. The road ahead bent deeper into clan territory. Grok followed it.
