Guidry stood at the edge of the dock, watching the morning mist roll across water that had made him rich in secrets and poor in respect. Forty years guiding these bayous had earned him a living, but never what he wanted most. The other guides still whispered the old story behind his back. Stryker's boat cut through the fog before Guidry heard the engine. His old friend stepped onto the dock with a rolled parchment under one arm and purpose in his eyes. He unrolled the contract without greeting, spreading it flat against the weathered planks. The map showed every channel Guidry knew, and one he'd never told a soul about. Stryker's finger traced the hidden route through the cursed waters. "Draw this path for me proper, and you'll guide every expedition that matters," Stryker said. "Refuse, and I'll find it myself. Then I'll make sure everyone knows you hid it." Guidry looked at the contract, at the pattern he'd carried alone for decades, now staring back at him in someone else's ink. His silence had been currency. Now it was coin someone else was ready to spend. Guidry reached down and pulled the knife from his belt. The bone handle felt familiar in his palm, stained dark from years of swamp work. He set it on top of the contract, pinning the parchment against the wood. "You want the route drawn true, we do this binding," he said. "Blood on the map means you don't sell it, don't copy it, don't share it without me there to guide." Stryker studied the blade, then met his eyes. "Deal." The word hung between them like a door swinging open. Guidry picked up the knife and made a shallow cut across his thumb. His blood fell onto the hidden channel, marking what had been invisible for so long. He was no longer the man who kept secrets. He was the man who sold them on his terms.
