Croaker stepped around the wooden stall and pointed toward the water behind the fish market. A massive crate sat half-submerged in the shallows, stuffed with rusted hooks, torn nets, and coils of frayed line. But it wasn't the tackle that made Guidry stop. Wedged between the spools was a jaw — scaled, enormous, with teeth like gutting knives. "Pulled that from the boundary marker last spring," Croaker said. "Before the thing that owned it came back looking for the rest." The jaw was proof that Croaker wasn't guessing. He'd tracked whatever broke through that gate. Guidry felt the weight of what he'd just agreed to. Forty years of silence, traded for one hunt. The village would know about the route. The elders would know he'd kept it from them. And the leverage he'd built his life around would be gone before sunset. But Croaker was already pulling a long gaff from the rack, testing the weight. "It's been circling the western channel since dawn," he said. "We move now, or it moves deeper." Guidry nodded and pushed back toward the boat. Stryker was waiting, watching him with the same look he'd worn when he'd first pulled out that contract. Guidry had spent decades calculating what secrets cost versus what they bought. Now he'd gambled his last one on a creature he hadn't seen and a promise he couldn't take back. He untied the line and felt lighter than he had in years — not free, but finally empty of the thing that had kept him awake. Respect wasn't something you held in reserve. It was something you earned by risking what mattered most.
