Chapter 1

Gunner wanted one thing that morning: to knock the big brown dog flat. The dog stood in the fenced play park, tail up, watching him. Gunner was a chocolate lab puppy, already too big for his own legs. If he could get a running start, he could hit the dog like a wave and send it rolling. That was the whole plan. But he could not settle long enough to run. The park was too loud for him. A wood chip snapped under his paw and he flinched. Wind rattled the low fence and his ears shot back. Every rustle sent him bolting sideways, and a sideways puppy cannot build speed. The brown dog waited near the water bowls. Gunner crept closer. A bird burst from the grass. Gunner spun and ran the wrong way, tail tucked, heart slamming. He tried again. He fixed his eyes on the brown dog and pushed off. Three steps in, a scared black dog darted past him, trembling and low. Gunner's nerve broke. He skidded, changed direction, and crashed into the fence instead. The brown dog just tilted its head. Gunner lay in the wood chips, panting. The problem was clear now. He could not charge because he could not stop jumping at every sound. The noise owned him. Then he noticed the ramp. A wooden ramp curved up from the ground to a shaded platform. Under the platform, out of the wind, a patch of sun fell on warm boards. No leaves rustled there. No fence rattled. Gunner walked to it and lay down. The heat sank into his fur. His breathing slowed. His ears stopped twitching. For the first time, the park went quiet inside him. He watched the brown dog from his warm spot and did not flinch. A gust shook the fence. He heard it, but he did not bolt. The still, warm boards had steadied him. Gunner stood. He kept his eyes on the brown dog and did not look at the grass or the fence. He pushed off the warm boards. One step. Two. No flinch. Three. He was running now, low and fast, straight and true. The brown dog saw him coming and braced too late. Gunner hit its shoulder full speed. The big dog toppled sideways into the wood chips with a startled huff. Gunner rolled over it, legs tangled, then scrambled up, wagging. He had done it. He had knocked a dog flat. The brown dog shook off the chips, stood, and stared at Gunner with new interest. It was not scared. It was not running. It planted its feet and lowered its front, tail high, ready to charge back. Gunner had won the first hit. Now the brown dog wanted a turn.
