Chapter 3

Gunner set his feet in the wood chips. The brown dog waited across the play space, chest low, tail high, wanting the charge. Gunner was warm now. His legs felt sure. He fixed his eyes on the brown dog and pushed off hard. But the shove was still in him. His blood ran fast and loose from the fight over the warm boards. His paws hit the ground crooked. He wanted straight, but his body would not hold the line. The fence rushed up on his left. A gate latch rattled. A ball bounced somewhere behind him. Every sound yanked his head. His run bent sideways. He tried to fix on the brown dog, but his feet chased the noise instead. He slid past the brown dog by a full body length, scrabbling, and thumped his shoulder into the low fence. The charge fell apart. He stood there, panting, off to the side, having hit nothing. The brown dog spun to face him. It did not wag. It did not drop into play. Confused, it backed a step, and a growl rolled in its throat. Across the park, near the fence, a trembling dog watched. It was black and low, wide-eyed, ears pinned, flinching at Gunner's noise. Gunner saw its fear. He knew that feeling. The scared dog crept away toward the far corner, tail tucked, keeping the fence at its back. Gunner's failed run had spooked it. Now the brown dog eyed him the same way the scared one did, unsure whether Gunner meant play or harm. The warm spot had steadied his mind. It had not steadied his blood. The shove had left him too wound up to run true. Gunner stopped fighting his own feet. He stood still and let his breath slow. He did not chase the ball sound. He did not turn toward the rattling gate. He looked at nothing but the brown dog's planted paws. When his chest stopped heaving, he backed up. Slow this time. He did not throw his weight forward all at once. He walked three steps toward the brown dog, easy, tail loose. The growl faded. The brown dog's ears lifted. Gunner had learned the hard lesson. Force alone bent his charge sideways. He could not shove his way into a straight run. The brown dog needed something softer first, a sign that Gunner came to play, not to slam. He dipped his front legs and bowed, rump in the air. It was the shape the brown dog itself had used before. The brown dog cocked its head. Its tail gave one slow swing, then another. Gunner had failed the charge. But he had found a new tool. Not the shove. The bow. The brown dog stepped toward him now, loose and easy, no longer braced to hit back.
