Chapter 4

Elizabeth had said yes. She wanted to see his world. But wanting was not the same as surviving it. Hades knew the dead could walk his halls forever. The living could not. So he crossed back down and went to find the one friend who might know a way. Thanatos met him in the ivy hall, the tall stone place where he counted the dead. Great black wings folded at his back. His face was kind and hard at once, worn by long work. He did not smile. Thanatos had carried more souls than anyone below, and he had never once carried a living queen. "I want to bring a mortal here," Hades said. "To stay. Alive." Thanatos was quiet. He looked at his friend a long moment. "No living queen has ever ruled below," he said. "None. The cold takes them. I have no counsel for keeping breath in a place built for the dead." "Then help me find counsel," Hades said. Thanatos said nothing more. He turned and left the hall. When he returned he carried a book. Its leather was dark and cracked. Heavy metal clasps held it shut. Strange marks ran across the cover. "This holds every soul I have bound," he said. "If there is an answer, it sleeps here." They opened it on the cold floor. Thanatos turned the pages with care. Names crawled past, thousands of them, some faint as smoke. Hades read fast, hunting for one line. Near the end Thanatos stopped. His finger pressed the page. "Here," he said. "You can bind her soul to yours. That ties her to the underworld. But binding alone kills the body. The soul stays and the flesh dies." He looked up. "Unless something holds her human while she is bound." "Then we make something," Hades said. They worked through the still hours. Thanatos read the words aloud. Hades gathered what the pages named. They wove a gown from threads that held living warmth, dark blue like the water where she read. They shaped a crown, not of cold metal but of green shoots that grew and breathed. A living crown for a living queen. So long as she wore both, her heart would beat below. Hades held the crown up. Small leaves opened along its band. "This will keep her alive on my throne." "So long as she wears them," Thanatos said. "Both. Never one without the other." He shut the book and pressed the clasps. His hard face did not soften. "There is a price in the binding, Hades. Once her soul is tied to yours, it cannot be untied. Not by you. Not by me. Whatever she feels the day it is done, she feels forever." Hades looked at the gown and the breathing crown. He had the means now. He only needed Elizabeth to say yes to something she could never take back.
