Chapter 1

Harold stood in the snow with his hockey duffel on his shoulder and nowhere to sleep. He had moved to Storyland Canada three weeks ago to play goalie for the Storyland Tales. He wanted this town to feel like home. But home meant a bed, and he did not have one. The team knew each other for years. Harold would not ask them for a couch. Asking looked soft, and soft goalies got replaced. He had found a cabin at the edge of town, empty and quiet. The door hung off one hinge. When he pushed it, the wood cracked and half of it fell into the snow. Rot climbed the frame like black mold. Inside smelled of damp and old ash. Harold set his bag down and stared at the ruin. He could not sleep here. Wind moved right through the broken doorway. He was still standing there when he heard boots on the ice behind him. "That door's been broken since before I got here," Crystal said. Harold turned. He knew Crystal from the arena. She sat close to the ice at his games. She cared for her Aunt Matty and rarely stayed to talk. Seeing her here, snow on her blue coat, caught him off guard. "I was checking it out," he said. He kept his voice flat. "I'll patch it." "With what?" She looked at the fallen door, then at him. "It's minus twenty tonight." Harold said nothing. He did not want her to see the truth. She saw it anyway. "You don't have a place," Crystal said. Not a question. He felt his face go hot. "I've got the arena. There's a bench." "The bench." She almost smiled, then didn't. "You'll freeze on that bench." "I'll be fine." She was quiet for a moment. Snow fell between them. When she spoke again her voice was smaller. "My aunt has a spare room. Nobody uses it. She's asleep by eight and she won't hear a thing." She stopped, then added, "I'm not doing you a favor. I need someone to shovel the walk in the mornings. It's too much for me." Harold studied her. He knew that trick. He used it himself. She was giving him a job so he would not feel like a charity case. "That's a real problem," he said carefully. "The walk." "It is." She met his eyes. "So it's a fair trade." Harold looked at the broken cabin one more time. Then he picked up his duffel bag. His pride told him to say no. Something else, quieter, told him this was the door he had been waiting for. "Fair trade," he said. They walked back toward town together. The cabin stayed behind them, dark and open to the wind. Harold had a bed now. But he also had a debt to a woman who guarded her home like it was the last safe thing she owned, and he did not yet know what that would cost either of them.
