Chapter 4

Harvey came back to the clinic the next morning and found Valerie already waiting at the door. She had her arms crossed. A folded paper sat in her hand. "Someone talked to the market clerk," she said. "About you. About the hippo who stopped in the street and stared at nothing. They want to bar you from town until they know you're safe." She held out the paper. It was a notice, short and plain. Two days to answer, or the ban would stand. Harvey read it twice. The stone in his pocket felt small. The cruel voice stirred, low, telling him to knock the notice from her hand. He pressed the stone hard and it quieted. "I froze," he said. "That's what they saw. I couldn't move." Valerie nodded. "Then we give the freezing something to do. Something small. Something your hooves can manage before the voice climbs." She went behind the counter and came back with two things. A blue sketchbook with an elastic band, palm-sized. And she waved him through the hall to a corner he had not seen before, a built-in bench under warm shelves of books, two cushions on a pink pad. "When you come back from town, you sit here first. You draw one line for each trigger you survived. No words. Just a line." She tapped the sketchbook. "And in the street, when you lock up, you take this out and draw one line right there. One line. That's the move. That's what breaks the freeze." Harvey slid the sketchbook into his chest pocket. He walked back to the market with the notice folded beside it. At the corner near the feed stall a cart clattered behind him and his legs stopped. The voice rose fast. He fumbled the sketchbook out, thumbed the band off, and dragged the pencil across the page. One line. His hoof shook, but it moved. He took a step. Another. The voice dropped. He walked to the clerk's window with the feed sack under one arm and the sketchbook open in his hoof. He showed the clerk the page. Six lines, uneven, some crooked. "Every one of these," Harvey said, "is a moment I kept walking." The clerk looked at the lines. Then at Harvey. She wrote something on the notice and stamped it. "Conditional," she said. "You keep the book. You show it if asked. One complaint and the ban comes back." Harvey returned to the clinic and sat in the reading nook without being told. He drew a seventh line, slow and straight. Valerie leaned in the doorway. "You're not barred," she said. It was not a question. Harvey shook his head. "Conditional." She looked at the sketchbook, then at him. "Then the book carries you now. Don't lose it." Harvey closed the elastic over the cover. The freeze had a lever. The town had a leash on him too.
