Chapter 1

Miku wanted to heal wounds with her voice, but her voice alone could not hold the mending note. She sat at the edge of the training plateau and hummed the note anyway. It broke in her throat, the way sealing songs once broke when she sang them alone. The air stayed empty. No wound closed. She needed an instrument to carry the sound. She did not have one. Aetherion landed beside her, folding his white wings with care. He was the First Wing, the trainer who taught riders to fly while Miku taught them to listen. For six days they had built this academy on the old plateau together. He had watched her rub her throat all morning. "Your riders fall," he said. "They break bones. I need a healer here." "I know." She looked at her empty hands. "But my voice can't carry healing. Not alone. I need a core. A stone that holds sound without shattering." "Where." "A sunken temple vault," she said. "The old singers left echoes about it. It holds crystallized echo stone. That stone traps sound and hardens it. It won't break under a healing note." Aetherion did not ask twice. He lowered his wing. "Then we go." He carried her over gray water until the drowned temple rose below. Weathered stone. Carved walls. A sealed door marked with winding lines. Miku felt the pull at once, the same gravity a lost note always gave off. It tugged her down toward the vault. She fought to keep her own direction. They landed on the flooded steps. The door would not move. Miku pressed her palm to the carved stone and hummed a low note, the one that opens. Her voice held for a breath. Then it cut off, sharp, the way it had the night the sealing song failed. The door stayed shut. "Again," Aetherion said. "I'll hold the ground beneath you." He set his horn against the door. Miku tried once more. This time she did not reach for the full note. She let his steadiness carry the weight her throat could not. The stone groaned. The door split open. Cold water rushed past their legs. Inside, on a cracked pedestal, the crystallized echo stone waited. Blue and violet crystal veined through gray rock. It hummed faintly when Miku stepped close. She lifted it with both hands. It was heavier than it looked, and warm. "This is the core," she said. "Now I can build the instrument." But as she raised the stone, a second hum answered from deeper in the vault. Low. Slow. Something behind a farther door had woken. The sealed presence that kept the temple hushed was stirring. Water began to drain backward, pulled toward that inner door. Miku held the stone against her chest. She had what she came for. She had also woken what the temple was built to keep asleep.
