The weapon takes shape beneath his hammer, each strike bringing him closer to perfection than he has ever been. Hephaestus feels it in the metal — something beyond craft, beyond skill. The blade holds a weight that has nothing to do with its mass. Then footsteps echo in the forge. A messenger stands at the entrance, barely glancing at the work spread across the golden anvil. "Zeus commands the weapon for his war," he says. "You will deliver it by dawn." Hephaestus's hammer freezes mid-swing. The spear before him — half-formed, its crystal orb still dark — needs three more days. Maybe four. The most important work of his life, and his father wants it unfinished. He looks at the blade, then at the messenger. "Tell him it isn't ready." The words come out steady, though his chest tightens. The messenger shifts his weight, uncomfortable. "The king of gods does not accept delay." Hephaestus turns back to the forge. Heat washes over his face as he lifts his hammer again. "Then he can come tell me himself." The messenger leaves. Hephaestus strikes the metal once more, but his hand shakes. Zeus will recognize the weapon's power — he always does. But he won't see what it could have been. No one ever does. The forge crackles and hisses, offering its wordless certainty. He works through the night, knowing the choice he's already made. When Zeus arrives, he'll have something to show him. Just not what his father expects.
