Chapter 1

Hephaestus set the blade on the anvil and watched it die. The curved steel he had poured for Hera lay cold under the forge lamps, gold runes dim, blue grip already fraying at the pommel. He pressed his palm to the flat and felt nothing answer back. It was a fine sword. It was not the weapon he needed to build for Aether, the boy who could pull lightning from empty sky without a bolt to help him. The council wanted this blade tomorrow. Aether wanted his weapon by the next moon. Hephaestus, bent on his bronze legs beside the anvil, knew both truths and knew the sword in front of him would shatter the instant Aether closed a hand around it. He limped to the mold rack and stared at the empty cradle where the next casting should sit. Steel would not hold sky-fire. He had learned that with three broken prototypes, each one split down the fuller like a dropped cup. The core needed a heart, something that could drink the current and give it back tempered. He had no such metal in the forge. He turned in place, and his eyes caught the hammer on the wall. His own hammer. Dark adamantine head, long wrapped handle, and set into the face a slab of orichalcum ore he had mined a century ago and never dared cut. The ore glowed inside its adamantine window like a trapped sunrise. He had used it to strike, not to spend. Orichalcum was god-metal. It drank fire and returned order. It was, he understood now, the only thing in Olympia that could sit inside a blade meant for Aether and not fail. He lifted the hammer down. The weight of it pulled on his shoulder, familiar as a hand. To cut the ore out was to break his own tool. He set the hammer face-up on the block and drove a chisel into the seam. The donkey stamped once behind him. Thetis had come in unbidden, gold ears twitching, bags loaded with tongs and quench oil. She knew the sound of a real pour beginning. Hephaestus nodded to her and struck again. The adamantine casing split. The orichalcum came free in his palm, hot even cold, faceted and heavy as a heart. He fed it to the crucible. He melted the failed blade with it. He poured a new core, wrapped it in fresh adamantine, and drew out the shape he had drafted a hundred times but never trusted to steel. Runes took the channel down the fuller and lit gold on their own. When he quenched the tang and lifted the finished sword, the air near the point crackled without being told to. Behind him, boots on marble. Aether stood in the forge doorway, gloved hands loose at his sides, watching the blade hum. "Show me," Aether said.
