Chapter 11

The next night, the route broke. Hermes dropped down the cliff with thirty souls roped behind him and found the gates shut. The bronze and obsidian doors had sealed into one slab of red stone. The arch above them glowed like a coal. No keyhole. No gap. Just a black iron tongue hanging where a handle should be, and a single word burned into the lintel: DEBT. Hermes pressed his palm to the stone. It was warm. The souls behind him drifted in a loose cloud, patient as fog, but he could feel them thinning at the edges. Souls left too long at a closed door began to forget their names. He had seen it once. It was like watching a candle eat its own wick. He lifted his staff. The one snake left along the laurel wood tightened against the grain, pointing down. Hades wanted him below. Hermes left the souls roped to a stone post and stepped onto the black water of the river. His winged sandals skimmed the surface, but the river drank the light from them. Two white feathers fell and floated away on the current. He walked the rest. Hades was waiting in a small chamber cut into the far bank, seated behind a low table with a ledger open between them. He did not look up. "The cupbearer," he said. "You hid a name from my book. A name is a thing I am owed. You will pay me in kind." He turned the ledger. "One name of yours, written here. Not the soul. The use of it. For one year I send messages under your seal, and you do not ask what they say." Hermes felt the offer land like a stone in his chest. His name was the fastest thing he owned. Lending it was lending the road itself. But the souls above were already forgetting, and a forgotten soul was a child wandering off a path in the dark. He took the quill. He signed. The ink went in black and came up gold. Hades closed the book and the red stone above split open with a sound like a long breath let out. Hermes climbed back to the gates and gathered his rope. The souls remembered themselves as they crossed the threshold, one by one, lit again. The route was open. But somewhere behind him, in a ledger he could not see, his name was now a key in another god's hand, and he did not know yet what door it would open.
