Huge Ajax's Arc

Chapter 282 of 619

The morning after the canal was sealed, Ajax stood at the sea gate and studied the open water. The iron bars faced the ocean plain. Any ship could sail past and mark the spot. The private road he had built now pointed a finger at his own walls. He needed the gate hidden, and he needed it soon. He found Elara at the herb strip, filling vials from her band. She had drained herself for him before, and each casting cost her more now than the last. He asked her plainly. "Can you make the sea gate vanish to the eye? So no ship reads it?" Elara set down a vial. "Concealment fades in days out here. Rain and salt break it. I would burn myself dry keeping it fresh, and it still fails." She did not soften it. "I can call the Emissary tonight. She may be able to help. She owes me a favor.” Tarron turned to Ajax and asked "The silk bolts you found. You told me every good is valued before use. I can make luxurious clothing to sell to the rich at port with it.” Ajax weighed it. The silk sold as clothes brought coin. "Use it. Make the garments," Ajax said. Tarron’s happiness showed on his face "I cut it today." Tarron was becoming kinder, more confident and less cocky, more softened, and more at home.
