Chapter 289

Ajax found Asher waiting at his door that night. The hall was dark. The other men slept. Asher had ridden at the back of the line once, banished, then earned his way back into the house. He was Ajax's first sworn man, the one who came to the marked stone before anyone else. Now he leaned against the frame, gold chain bright at his open collar, and watched Ajax with the calm of a man who had already decided. "You marked six with a kiss," Asher said. "Then Tarron made it seven. I heard." Ajax stopped in the doorway. He had confessed to the whole council. He would not lie to one man in the dark. "I did." "I was your first man." Asher did not raise his voice. He never did. "Before Grayson stayed. Before any of them. I came to your stone." Ajax remembered the crossroads camp, the wolf paw cut in stone, this blonde man riding in alone to swear until the new moon. Asher had chosen Marco since then. Ajax knew it. He waited to hear what Asher wanted. "You want the same," Ajax said. "I want you to stop counting who came first." Asher stepped close. "I earned my place twice. I killed the axeman at your back. I held the wall. I stayed past the new moon because I chose this house. Not because you asked." Ajax looked at him. The kind lines around the eyes, the hard set of the jaw, the chest hair above the chain. Asher had every right to stand here. He had bled for the gate. He had bound his own feet to the mark like the rest. "Marco," Ajax said. It was the one wall between them. "Marco knows I came here." Asher held his gaze and did not flinch. "He told me to. Said if you built this brotherhood on truth, you owed me the same as the others." Ajax believed him. Marco heard every thought in camp. He would not send Asher into a lie. And a house that valued one man over another would crack the way his old plans cracked. He would not let his first sworn man walk out counting slights. Ajax closed the door. He drew Asher in by the chain at his throat and kissed him. Asher gave it back with weight, no hesitation, his hand flat on Ajax's bare chest. It was not quick. Neither man pulled away first. When they broke, their faces stayed close. Asher's breath was warm. "Now we're even," Asher said. "Now we're even," Ajax said. Asher stepped back into the hall and was gone. Ajax stood in the dark and understood what he had made. The brotherhood held not by oath alone, but by fairness, man to man, first to last. Come spring, no sworn man would ride out feeling passed over. That was the bond that would keep them, tighter than any wage or wall.
