Chapter 426

With the sea watch filled, Ajax turned to the northern trade. Marcus Tidewater captained his ship, and Tucker Hoskins sailed with him to keep the captain honest. But before the next run north, both men lingered at the bar. Ajax knew the arrangement well. Tucker drew captains out with drink and easy talk, and Marcus wanted him. That want kept the captain loyal. Ajax watched it work from across the room. Marcus leaned close over the table. His shirt hung open at the chest, silver chain bright against dark hair. He spoke in short words, the way he always did. "One more cask," he told Tucker. "Then the suite." Tucker poured the wine slow, letting his gold chains catch the lamplight. "You're in a hurry," he said. He set the cup down but kept his hand near it. "Ship sails at dawn. Plenty of time to waste." "Not wasting it." Marcus took the cup. He did not smile, but his eyes stayed on Tucker's mouth. "I sail eight days. I come back for you. That's the deal." Tucker knew the game. He had built it. He held Marcus in reach and never quite let go. Ajax had taught him the value of a promise held back. But tonight Tucker leaned in first. "Deal's paid up," he said. "You held your word north and back. So did I." He tipped his head toward the stairs. "Suite's open." Marcus stood. He gripped Tucker's arm above the bracelet and pulled him close. Their mouths met hard by the bar. The captain's hand pressed flat against Tucker's chest. Tucker let it happen, then broke the kiss with a low laugh. "Upstairs," he said. "Not here." Ajax watched them climb the stairs together. He did not follow. He had spent months binding this man to the sea route, first through fear and silver, then through desire. Marcus sailed home fast because Tucker waited. Now the two moved past the bargain into something steadier. That worked in Ajax's favor. A captain who wanted to come back was worth more than one bound by chain alone. At dawn Ajax stood on the dock inside the canal. The ship rode low, its hold packed with hides and needles and casks of plum wine. Marcus came down the gangway with Tucker behind him. Both men looked worn and easy, the night written on them. Marcus took the wheel without a word. Tucker coiled a line at the stern. "Eight days," Ajax said. "Sell the cargo. Buy steel and grain. Come home." Marcus nodded once. "We'll come home." The iron sea gate opened, hidden from any ship beyond. The vessel slid out into gray water, cargo bound for the red quay house north. Ajax watched the sail shrink toward the horizon. His trade ran on two things now: silver and want. Both held. His house would eat and arm through winter, and his brotherhood grew a step closer to standing on its own.
