Chapter 595

The boat rocked at the town's dock two days after the well was sealed. Ajax expected to load grain and sail west. Instead a crowd waited on the stones. The old council man stood at the front, no lamp this time, hands empty. His people had brought baskets and jars and a folded roll of cloth. "You mended what we could not," the old man said. "We came to thank you." Ajax stepped down onto the dock. Chalam followed, staff loose in his hand. Rowan hung back near the rail, bow slung, watching the roofs out of habit. Kael and Torren flanked Ajax, arms crossed, reading the crowd for a blade. There was none. The old man held out the cloth. Inside lay a strip of worked leather, tanned dark, stamped along its length with the town's mark. "A trade token," he said. "Show it at any gate on this coast. They know us. They will deal with you fair." He pressed it into Ajax's hand. "You wanted a way back through our wall. Now you have a way through every wall we trade with." Ajax turned the leather over. This was more than grain. This was passage. A stranger from the wild lands now held a name good along an unmapped coast. "There's more," the old man said. Women brought forward the jars and baskets. Salt fish. Dried root. Two bolts of coarse cloth. "Winter stores. And this." He nodded, and a boy carried out a small iron chest. "Coin. Not much. All we could spare." Chalam ran his staff over the chest, then over the leather token. "No working on either," he said. "Clean. They mean it." Rowan spoke from the rail, flat. "Then take it." Kael and Torren loaded the stores while Ajax and the old man stood face to face. "We feared you brought sickness," the old man said. "We were wrong. You brought a mended stone." He looked at the token in Ajax's fist. "Some men take from a town. You gave it back its water. That's why we mark you a friend, not a threat." Ajax closed his hand around the leather. He had come west chasing a door older than his father's line. He had found a dead thing under a well. Now he sailed away with something he had not hunted for: a trade name on a coast no one at Black Oak had ever charted. The boat pushed off at dusk. Ajax stood at the rail with the token cool against his palm. Chalam settled beside him, quiet. "That opens more than one gate," Chalam said. "I know," Ajax said. He looked west, past the reef, toward the walled town they had left standing. The thanks was a door. And every door he opened now pointed to the next.
