Chapter 1

Ian left the palace with a wildflower behind his ear and a name he could not say aloud. The name belonged to the person he had chosen to love, the one his crown would never bless. His father wanted him wed to a stranger by spring. So Ian took a horse, a riding coat, and the signet ring he shoved deep in his pocket. He rode until the candlelit tower behind him shrank to a spark, then to nothing. By dusk he understood his mistake. He had packed no tent, no map, no plan for the night. The road ran empty in both directions. Cold crept up from the ground. His horse tired, and Ian had no idea where to shelter it or himself. A prince alone on an open road was a prize. Anyone could take the ring, the horse, or worse. Ian pulled the coat tight and searched the dark for any roof. Then a light moved through the trees. Not a lantern. A fox trotted onto the road, and wings of ember-colored fire spread from its back. The glow lit the mud, the grass, and Ian's own hands. The fox stopped, stared, and flicked its bright tail toward the treeline. Then it went, slow enough to follow. Ian should have feared it. He followed instead. The fox led him off the road to a squat stone building half swallowed by moss. Old ivy hung over the door. A waystation, the kind travelers once used and forgot. The fox slipped inside. Ian tied his horse and ducked under the low beam. Inside was dry. A cold hearth waited in one corner. A wooden trunk sat against the far wall, its iron corners dull with age. The fox curled by the hearth and watched him. Ian knelt and pried the trunk open. Flint. A folded blanket. A stub of candle. Someone had stocked this place for a night exactly like his. He lit the candle and built a small fire. Warmth returned to his fingers. Then he noticed the trunk sat too shallow inside for its outer size. He pressed the base. A panel shifted. Beneath it lay a single flower, pale as the moon, its petals still fresh though no garden grew for miles. Ian lifted it and knew. Only one person left such things for him to find. The one he had ridden away to keep. The one who had known he would run before he knew it himself. This waystation was not luck. It was a message. He was safe for the night. That was over. Now a harder truth pressed in. Someone was already one step ahead of him on this road, guiding his path in the dark. Ian did not know if that meant rescue or a trap. He set the flower beside the candle and stared at the door, waiting for whoever came next.
