Chapter 1

Ice Bird wanted a mate more than warmth itself. Every winter, the other birds danced across the frozen sky, and their partners chose them. Ice Bird had watched from a snowbank, wings folded, too ashamed to try. Tonight the flock gathered on the ice. Ice Bird lifted off, hovered, and flapped in a jerky circle. A gray female tilted her head, then turned away. The moves were wrong. Ice Bird had never once seen a courtship dance up close, so there was nothing to copy. Clumsy flapping only drove mates off. Ice Bird landed hard and hid behind a ridge of snow. If a dance could not be copied, it had to be found. Somewhere, someone must have kept the old dances. A hunched heron pointed a wing toward the hills. "The cavern remembers," she said. "Go while your feathers still shine." Ice Bird flew until dusk and found a mouth of stone in a cliff. Ice sheeted the walls. Inside, huge murals covered every surface. Carved birds spread their wings across the frozen rock. Ice Bird studied one figure, then the next. The pictures showed each step in order: the low bow, the spin, the rising leap, the shiver of open wings. Ice Bird traced the shapes with a wingtip and copied them, slowly at first, then faster. Step by step, the dance began to live in Ice Bird's body. But a copied dance was still just a copy. The gray female had seen worse dancers before. Ice Bird needed something no other bird could match. Deep in the cavern, light flickered. A cluster of ice crystals grew from the floor. Each face caught the dim glow and threw it back in rainbow streaks across the walls. Ice Bird broke free the smallest shard and held it in one claw. Even a weak turn of the wing sent color spinning around the stone. Ice Bird tucked crystals along both wings, pressing them into the feathers until they held. Then Ice Bird practiced the mural steps again. Every motion scattered light. A crooked spin looked bold. A wobbly leap flashed like fire. The crystals turned each mistake into something dazzling. Ice Bird flew back to the flock under a black sky. The birds had settled on the ice for the night. Ice Bird landed at the center and began the dance from the murals. Wings opened. Rainbow light poured across the snow. The birds woke and stared. Ice Bird bowed low, spun, and leaped, and color chased every move. The gray female stepped forward. She did not turn away this time. She watched, then began to copy the steps herself. Ice Bird finished the dance and stood shaking with cold and hope. The clumsiness was gone. But now the whole flock had seen the light, and every unmated bird pressed closer, wanting the same crystals for themselves.
