Illiya kept walking until the spired building was behind her. The ledger stayed flat against her ribs. She meant to find a quiet corner and read. Instead, when she reached the reading hall, the reserved desk was not empty. The elf student from the gardens sat in her chair. A folded paper lay open under one pale hand — her grandmother's hand, her grandmother's note. The elf looked up and did not move. Illiya stopped in the doorway. Whatever came next, she would not be the one to walk away first. The elf slid a brass-tagged key across the desk. The number was etched in stone, and a name was cut beside it — not Illiya's. An older name. The elf said the room had been hers, once, before it was reassigned. She had kept the key. She had kept the note too, found tucked inside a book left behind. She wanted to know why a dead woman's handwriting matched a living girl's margins. Illiya sat. She did not reach for the paper. She asked the elf to walk with her to the gazebo at the edge of the lawn, where carved beams shimmered and no shelf could hide a listener. The elf folded the envelope shut, gold seal pressed flat, and followed. Under the dome, Illiya laid the ledger on the stone bench. She told the elf one true thing: her grandmother had left a trail, and the elf was standing on it. The elf placed the key and the sealed envelope in Illiya's palm and closed her fingers around them. In return, she asked for a name — the name of the man in the spired building. Illiya did not have it. She promised to find it. The elf left first. Illiya stayed under the carved dome with two more pieces of her grandmother's road in her hand, and a debt now owed to someone who knew her secret and had not yet spoken it aloud.
