Chapter 4

Inyuin reached the fallen stars at dawn. She spun them at the crystal spring, thread by thread, until she had a gown that almost held together. Almost. The seams needed one more strand, something to bind starlight to starlight without dulling the glow. Nothing in her tower would do it. She sat on the cold cave floor, gown across her knees, and knew she was short. Hours from the Ball, and short. Then a light moved in the dark above the spring. She looked up. A moth drifted down on wings marked like a strip of night sky. Silver dust fell from it and glowed on the water. Inyuin held her breath. She had heard the old story from her teacher, whispered while they wove. A creature that spun true starlight into thread. She had thought it a comfort, not a fact. The moth settled on the gown. A thin, bright strand trailed from its body and caught on the fabric. Silk. Real silk, spun from light. Inyuin lifted it with a trembling hand and wound it onto her spindle. It did not die. It did not dull. She wove it through the loose seams, and the gown pulled tight and whole in her hands. She laughed out loud in the empty cave. She barely felt the run to Nightfang Castle. She reached the east gate as the sky turned deep blue. Thora Ironheart stood at the post, tall in her armor, red cape pinned at her shoulder. She had promised Inyuin passage here three nights ago, one outsider to another. Her face was hard and set, the same face that made the tavern go quiet. She did not soften it for anyone. "You finished it," Thora said. She looked at the gown draped over Inyuin's arms, at the light bleeding soft between the folds. "Damn. You actually finished it." "I found the last thread," Inyuin said. "A moth. It spun the silk I needed. I would have failed without it." She could not stop smiling. She stepped close and took Thora's rough hand in both of hers. "And I would have failed without you. You gave me the door." Thora's jaw shifted. Green skin darkened across her cheeks. She looked at their joined hands and did not pull away. "It's just a gate," she said, quieter than before. But she did not let go. Inyuin held on a moment longer. Then a horn sounded inside the walls, low and long. The Ball had begun. Guests were already climbing the main stairs, old families in gowns that shone. Thora stepped back and set her hand on the gate. "Go," she said. "Before they close the doors." Inyuin passed through. The gown was done. But she stood alone now, at the edge of a hall full of people who had turned her away twice. The making was over. The proving had not yet begun.
