Chapter 1

Iris Caldwell wanted one thing: a quiet place where no one could see her. The market gave her the opposite. It packed her between shouting sellers and shoving strangers. She stood a full head taller than the crowd, and every face turned up to look. She hunched her shoulders and stared at her boots. She knew no hidden valley, no empty cabin, no path away from these people. So she stayed, sweating, trapped in the noise she hated most. A hand tugged her sleeve. "You," said a small man behind a folding table. "Tall girl. You walk like you want to be somewhere else." She pulled her arm back. "I'm fine." "You're not." He grinned and spread his hands over his wares. Cracked bottles. Bent spoons. Nothing worth stopping for. "But I have the cure. Come closer. I don't bite, and neither does the book." He lifted a thick volume bound in worn leather. He opened it across the table. Inside lay a map, crowded with roads in red and blue ink. Handwritten notes filled the margins. Symbols marked spots between the printed lines. "A hunter made this," the peddler said. "He walked every trail no coach knows. He marked the ones nobody uses." His finger tapped a faint dotted line that curled north into empty space. "See here? No town. No people. Just the path and where it ends." Iris leaned in despite herself. The dotted line ran past the last village mark. It stopped at a small drawn symbol, alone, ringed by blank paper. A note beside it read: still water, no smoke, no neighbors. Her chest tightened. For the first time the market noise dropped away. Here was the thing she had told herself did not exist. A route out. A place hidden from everyone. "How much?" she asked. The peddler named a price. It was most of the coin in her pocket. She thought of the food it would buy, the room she could rent for a week. Then she thought of another week among these people, hemmed in, watched. She counted the coins into his palm. He closed her fingers over the atlas. "The trails aren't easy," he said. "That's why they're empty." "Empty is what I want." She pushed back through the crowd. This time she did not hunch. She held the book against her chest and walked with a purpose she had not felt in months. At the market's edge she opened it again and traced the dotted line with her finger. It led north, away from the roads, away from the villages, into blank paper and a single small mark. She had no idea what waited there. But now she had a direction, and the noise behind her mattered less with every step. Iris Caldwell walked out of the market and turned north.
