Chapter 5

Iris reached the top of the ridge by first light. The wind had died in the night. Ahead the path split in two. One branch bent left along the rim. One dropped right toward the valley floor. She pulled out the atlas and held it against the wind. The peddler's lines showed nothing clear. She had already caught the map in one lie. She could not trust it now. She crouched and studied both branches. The right one looked wider and easier. The left one clung to the cliff edge and narrowed fast. Easy paths went down. Down meant the valley. Down meant the lizardfolk. But she was not sure. A wrong guess would drop her among the tall scaled creatures the old man had warned her about. Their tails could break bone. She had no weapon but a coil of rope. She waited for better light. As the sun climbed, a small shape stirred beside the left branch. A bat clung to the underside of a stone shelf. Its wings were folded tight. It had a fox-brown body and a sleek dark face. It sensed her and dropped into the air. It flew left along the rim, then vanished into a crack in the rock. Bats slept where it was dark and cold and empty. They did not roost above a valley full of hunters. She marked the left branch as the safe one and started along it. The path narrowed as she feared. Loose stone slid under her boots. She kept one gloved hand on the cliff wall. Below her the valley opened. She saw them now. Tall figures moved between the trees, scales catching the low sun. One lifted its head as if listening. Iris froze against the rock. She did not breathe. The creature turned and moved on. The left path had held. It carried her above them, past the reach of their tails. By midday the ridge began to fall. The valley shrank behind her. The path led down into a hollow ringed by bare peaks. No smoke rose there. No trail cut through. In the center stood a huge bush of blue roses. Its branches reached out like slow arms. Thorns bristled along the twisted trunk. The flowers were the size of her two hands. Nothing else grew near it. Iris stopped at the edge of the hollow and stared. This was the mark. This was the place the peddler had promised. Still water lay in a small pool past the roses. No neighbors. No crowds. No voices. She had crossed the ridge and passed the lizardfolk and found it real. She stepped down into the hollow. The quiet pressed on her ears like water. She walked to the great rose bush and touched one thick branch. It did not move for her. It only stood, old and rooted, guarding the center of the hollow. She remembered the old man's words. The center is always guarded. Mine too. He had chased his place for forty years and never reached it. She had reached hers. She sat down against a warm stone and let the silence hold her. Iris stayed. She built no walls that first day. She only listened to the wind and the pool and her own slow breath. The bat returned at dusk and hunted over the water. The blue roses stood dark against the last light. No crowd would follow her here. No market voices, no press of strangers. She had wanted a place hidden from the world, and she had found it. For the first time she could remember, Iris was not afraid of the quiet. She had earned it, and it was hers.
