Chapter 2

Irix carried the cloudy vessel along the shore until they found a cracked concrete slab veined with glowing crystal. Still water ringed it. Small hermit crabs clicked across its surface. From here, the reef could see them. From here, they could wait. Irix sat down and set the vessel between their knees. The reef did not stir. Far up the slope stood a tall stone column, crystal blooming along its sides, a faded mark near its crown. Past that, half-hidden in dune grass, sat a low building of metal and glass panels. The visitor's base. The teacher's roof. "I saw what they left," Irix said to the water. "The tower. The house with the windows. The cup they used to pour fear into you." The ribbon-tailed burrower crept onto the platform and watched, its hinged crown twitching. Irix lifted the vessel so the reef could see it clearly. "I am going to break this. Not to hurt you. To show you I am not them." Their hands shook. The last bond they had carried badly pressed against their ribs, listening too. Irix struck the vessel against the cracked stone. It split. Cloudy residue washed into the shallows and dissolved. The reef shuddered once — then opened a single polyp, slow as a held breath, and tasted the water where the fear had been. It was not yes. It was not bonding. But the reef had answered. Irix lowered their forehead to the cool stone and understood the next thing: the ones who taught it were still nearby, and the reef had only opened because it believed Irix would face them.
