The coin was still warm in Jade's palm when the wind shifted. A torn page skidded across the workbench and stuck to the bridle's leather. Then another. Raihan's hackles rose, smoke curling thick from his shoulders. Jade picked up the page and read a single word inked in a shaking hand. Hal. More pages tumbled along the path, leading away from the treehouse. Jade followed them on foot, Raihan padding close. The trail ended at the dead tree on the rise, its black trunk split by old lightning. A red gingham blanket lay spread at its roots, weighted with a long ledger scroll. A thin man sat on the blanket, smiling like he had been waiting all morning. "Let me end the story, Hal," Jade said. She did not know how she knew his name. The pages had told her. He stood. He had no weapon, only the scroll, and he held it out as if offering tea. Raihan growled low. Jade put a hand on the wolf's neck and stepped past him. "Stay," she said. "This one is mine." She did not call stone from the ground. She called the pages instead. They rose around her in a slow spiral, every torn edge sharp. Hal's smile thinned. He spoke a name that was not hers and tried to step into his own shadow. Jade closed her fist. The pages struck inward like a hundred small blades, and the shadow under him snapped shut on empty air. The scroll fell open on the blanket, its lines blank, waiting. Jade picked up the scroll and wrote one line in charcoal from the burned tree. Ended, by my own hand. Raihan watched, quiet, and did not step forward to share it. She rolled the scroll, tucked it under her arm, and walked back down the rise alone — knowing the village had not seen this, and that, this time, that was enough.
