Chapter 5 of 20

By dawn, the flag above Jade's door still held its breeze, but the village below had changed. Word had spread fast. The hooded figure she once drove off had left fresh signs in the night. Jade climbed down with Raihan at her side, and the smoke curling from his fur thinned in the cool air. The villagers had not been idle. At the edge of the square stood a new wooden fort, hastily raised from weathered planks and sharpened posts. Two men watched from its high balcony, eyes on the tree line. The mayor met Jade at its gate. "We built it through the night," he said. "But building walls is not the same as knowing what waits beyond them." He led her down a tan brick road that curved past the well. The bricks ended at a scorched patch of earth where the air felt wrong. "This is where it was last seen," the mayor said. "It stepped into its own shadow and was gone." Raihan lowered his head and growled. Terra waddled forward from behind Jade, sniffing the dark soil with steady focus. The badger's calm did more to settle the watching villagers than any promise Jade could give. An older woman pushed through the crowd then, arms full. She held seven brown leather collars, each fitted with a small black device. "My husband made these before he passed," she said. "Translators. So a beast might speak a человек's tongue." Her hands shook. "Please. We don't know what's coming. But your companions might." Jade took the collars carefully. She knelt and fastened one around Raihan's neck. He huffed, and a low voice rose from the device — quiet, certain. "It is still near. Watching." Terra's collar clicked next. "The ground remembers it," the badger said. "I can follow." The villagers stepped back, not in fear, but in wonder. Jade felt the weight of every eye and did not look away. She stood and faced the crowd. "I will find it," she said. "And this time, it will not slip away." The mayor nodded. The old woman pressed a hand to her mouth. Jade turned toward the scorched earth with Raihan and Terra beside her, the remaining collars over her shoulder. The villagers had given her their trust, plain and open. Now she had to be worthy of it.
