Chapter 4

The song crossed the valley and came back thin. Jade waited on the ridge for an answer. None came. No horn from the far towns. No lantern lit on the road. The brass box had thrown the anthem far, but a song only lives when other throats pick it up. The Silence had heard them. No one else had. "They're not singing back," Jade said. Luna stood at the edge of the ridge, boots planted, red hair whipping. She had played every wet market and cold hall between here and the capital. She knew the sound of a room that wouldn't move. "A voice from a cliff is a stranger," she said. "They won't join a stranger." "Then what do they join?" "A song they already know." Jade looked down at the tavern below. Its neon burned pink and gold against the dusk. The Riffing Tavern had a stage. It had walls that had held a hundred choruses. It had people inside right now, drinking, waiting for something. "We go down," Jade said. "We teach it to a room first. A room can carry it to the next room." Riley came up the path with her sticks tucked in her belt. Jade had met her only days ago, another drummer from another band, drawn here by the same pull. Riley did not waste words. She looked at the box, then at the sky where the thin place widened. "Small first," she said. "Then loud." They packed down and moved. Inside the tavern the air was beer and sawdust. Twenty faces turned. A farmer. Two miners. A girl with a fiddle across her knees. Jade set the brass box on the boards. She did not plug it into the far ridge. She turned it low, aimed at the room. "You'll learn this in one pass," Jade said. "Then you sing it with me." Behind the bar, an old record player sat under dust. Runes ran along its base. Jade lifted the needle off a dark disc painted with small witch figures. She set her own sound in its place, the anthem's chorus, four bars, looped through the box. She played the line. Luna sang it once, hard and plain. Riley tapped the count on the bar with two fingers. Jade played it again. The fiddle girl came in on the third pass. The miners on the fourth. By the sixth the farmer was pounding the table and the chorus filled the room and pushed against the door. Jade lifted the box off the boards and opened the tavern door wide. The chorus rolled out into the street. A boy across the road stopped his cart and picked up the line. On the far ridge, the thin place shivered. It had come for one voice. It found a crowd. It kept coming, faster now.
