Chapter 2

Jasmine was three episodes into editing the cooking series when a new message pinged on her phone. A lifestyle brand with two million followers had slid into her DMs. They liked the microphone bit. They wanted a pitch deck by Friday — brand voice, visual system, three campaign concepts. Four days. She read it twice. Her first real inbound, and she had nothing but a moodboard and a viral fluke. She googled pitch decks for an hour and got worse at breathing. Every example looked like a magazine. Hers would look like a girl in a rented room with a ring light. She needed help, and she needed it before Friday. She posted in a private creator forum asking for a strategist who could turn around fast. One name kept coming back. Jasmine paid the consultation fee before she could think about the number. Victoria Sterling joined the video call four minutes late, hair in a tight bun, blazer sharp, glasses catching the light. She did not smile. She had already opened Jasmine's channel in a second window. "Show me the microphone video," Victoria said. "Then the three before it." Jasmine screen-shared. Victoria watched without blinking. When it ended she said, "You have a voice. You don't have a brand. There's a difference." Jasmine's face went hot. "I have four days." "Then stop pitching yourself as a beauty creator. That deck loses. Everyone has that deck." Victoria pulled up a clean template on her screen and dropped it into the chat. Navy and cream, a shield in the center, room for a mark and a tagline. "This is the bones. You fill it. One promise. One voice. Three concepts that only you could pitch." "The voice is the cooking voice," Jasmine said. It came out before she could stop it. Victoria's eyebrow moved a quarter inch. "Show me." Jasmine played thirty seconds of a burnt-egg episode. The low narration. The collapsing yolk. Victoria let it run to the end. "That's the deck," Victoria said. "Lifestyle, narrated like a wildlife film. The microphone is the logo. Cooking is the wedge. Beauty is the crossover. You own a lane no one else is standing in." Jasmine worked for seventy-two hours. She slept in ninety-minute blocks. She built the deck on the template, wrote a one-line promise, drafted three concepts, and cut a sizzle reel from the pilot episode with her face blurred and the voice clean. She sent it Thursday night. The brand replied Friday at noon. They passed. Too raw for their current quarter. They asked to be kept in mind. Jasmine sat on the floor of the bright room with the tall windows and read the email twice. She had lost the deal. She also had a deck now, a mark, a lane, and a strategist's number. She opened a new document and started a list of ten brands she could pitch on Monday, using the cooking voice on the cover page.
