Chapter 2

The mark on the collar named the ridge, but the memory behind it stayed locked. Jax knelt over the dead thornstalker in the gray dawn. He turned the leather in his hands and stared at the burned symbol. He knew that shape. He had seen it on banners, on shields, on the commander's own arm. But the war it belonged to would not surface. Without the whole memory, he could not guess the man's next move. He would be chasing shadows on that ridge while Lyra sat unguarded in the village. He rode the black horse hard through the trees. Silver sparks trailed from its tail. Its glowing hooves found sure ground where his eyes could not. By midmorning he reached the cabin. Amber light glowed in its windows. Carved beams held the low roof. Lyra opened the door before he knocked. "You look worse than the last time," she said. Her hands were streaked with soot. Blue fire still flickered at her fingertips, controlled now, small as candle flames. She did not flinch from it. She had learned that much without him. He held out the collar. "I know this mark. I can't remember why. And I can't fight him blind." Lyra looked at the burned symbol. Then she looked at him. "The bond runs both ways," she said. "You've been carrying my grief and heat for years. Let me carry something back." He wanted to refuse. Instead he sat at the rough stone hearth. She knelt in front of him and pressed her palm to his chest. The blue fire climbed his skin without burning. It reached past bone, past the years, into the buried war. The memory broke open. He saw the ridge above the tree line. He saw the commander wait three days before every strike, always at dawn, always from the high ground. The man never charged. He starved his enemies of sleep and food, then hit when they were weakest. Jax felt his own old fury return, sharp and clear. He remembered how he had lost that final battle. Not to strength. To patience. He pulled back, gasping. Lyra sat still, pale, her fire gone dark. She had taken part of the weight, and it had cost her. "He waits," Jax said. "Three days. Then he strikes at dawn from above." He gripped her shoulder. "Now I know his rhythm. I can beat him to it." But relief lasted only a breath. If the commander struck on a schedule, he had already set his clock. Somewhere north, the count had begun. And Jax had just learned the man's pattern by drawing power through the bond. He had proven again how tightly he was tied to Lyra. The commander wanted her. And the surest way to break Jax was through the woman whose soul now shared his war. Jax stood. He had the knowledge. He also had a deadline he could not see the start of.
