Chapter 1

Jeff wanted to forge a blade in the deepest furnace of Metalhalls, the one that had killed every smith who tried. He had the steel. He had the hammer. What he did not have was a way down. The tunnels under the mountain split and twisted for miles, and no map showed the path to the lowest fire. Get it wrong, and he would die in the dark long before the heat. He lived at the top of a leaning tower with rainbow tiles and crooked windows. His green hair caught the lamplight as he spread old charts across the table. None of them reached deep enough. His jade toad squatted on the corner of a map, blinking, useless. "I need someone who has walked those tunnels," Jeff said. The toad said nothing. That night a knock came at the door. A boy stood on the step, black hair spiked with sweat, a leather apron scarred by burns. A smith's hammer hung at his belt. Jeff knew the face from the smithing yards. This was Garrick Ashford, the apprentice who had run from his master's forge weeks ago and vanished. "They said you're mad enough to seek the deepest furnace," Garrick said. He did not wait to be asked in. He stepped past Jeff and eyed the maps. "These are worthless. None of them go below the third gate." "And you know what does?" Jeff asked. Garrick pulled a folded scrap from inside his apron. He smoothed it on the table beside the toad. It showed narrow passages, marked in charcoal by a shaking hand. "My master kept this hidden. I stole it before I left. It shows the way to the bottom fire." He tapped a spot near the edge. "He drew it, then never went. He wasn't brave enough." Jeff studied the lines. They led past the third gate, down and down, to a small mark shaped like a flame. His pulse jumped. "Why give it to me?" Jeff said. Garrick's jaw tightened. "Because I can't go alone, and I won't go back to him. You want the furnace. I want to prove his fire didn't beat me." He met Jeff's eyes. "I'll guide you. But once we pass the third gate, there's no climbing back the way we came. The passage floods behind you." Jeff looked at the steel resting by the wall. He looked at the toad. Then he rolled the charcoal map and slid it into his belt. "We leave at first light," Jeff said. Garrick nodded and sat by the cold hearth, already home. Jeff had his path now. He also had a partner he barely knew, and a road that would close behind them the moment they stepped onto it.
