Chapter 1

Jennifer Windsor read the review twice, then threw her phone across the loft. It cracked against a brick wall. WASHED-UP AT FORTY, the headline had said. The writer called her a relic, a name too tired to sell tickets. Jennifer wanted one thing: a sold-out comeback tour that proved she still ruled rock. Now three promoters had gone quiet in a single morning. Her Doberman lifted his head and watched her pace. She had built two decades on stages that shook. One cruel article was undoing it fast. The knock came at noon. Jennifer opened her tall French Quarter window instead, expecting nobody. But the man at her door had let himself into the stairwell already. Victor Ashford stood in the doorway in a black suit, unbothered by the heat. He had bankrolled her first tour, back when clubs wouldn't book her either. He never aged, never sweated, never explained why. Jennifer had learned not to ask. "You read it," Victor said. He nodded at the shattered phone. "So did every promoter in three states." "I don't need a lecture." Jennifer crossed her arms. "I need a stage." "Then stop waiting for permission." He set a folded paper on her table. "I own a room. Six hundred seats. Tonight it's empty." Jennifer stared at him. "One club show. That's your fix for a dead career." "One show they can't ignore." Victor's red eyes stayed level. "Invite the writer who buried you. Fill the room yourself. Prove the piece wrong in front of him." The risk landed hard. A half-empty room would seal the story. Every promoter would call it proof. But an empty schedule would bury her just as surely. Jennifer looked at her dog, then at the cracked phone on the floor. "If nobody comes," she said, "I'm finished." "If nobody comes, you were already finished." Victor almost smiled. "I think they'll come." Jennifer spent the afternoon on a borrowed phone. She called old fans, old crew, the bartender who'd first put her on a stage. She posted one message: tonight, free door, no press release. Then she pulled her guitar from its case and tuned it for the first time in months. By eight, the line wrapped past the corner. By nine, the six hundred seats were gone and people stood along the walls. The writer came too, notebook out, arms folded near the back. Jennifer walked into the light and hit the first chord. The room roared louder than any arena she remembered. She played ninety minutes and left them screaming for more. Backstage, sweat soaked and shaking, she saw the writer waiting. He held up his phone. His follow-up post was already live: SHE'S BACK. It had ten thousand shares and climbing. Victor handed her a towel. "Now they'll book you," he said. "But the offers won't come free. Everyone who ignored you this morning will want a piece of you by dawn."
