Chapter 1

Jessica had spent six years learning the names of the innocent, and tonight she finally held one she could trust. She crouched in the records vault beneath the prison, her auburn hair tied back, a stolen ledger open across her knees. The guards called her a clerk. She was something worse to them, if they knew. For six years she had copied intake files by lamplight, matching dates, charges, and lies. She wanted to free the falsely imprisoned and undo the law that caged them. But she could never prove who deserved freedom and who deserved the cell. That was the trap. Open the wrong door, and she loosed a true killer on the world. So she read, and waited, and read more. Tonight the pattern broke open. She laid three ledgers side by side. The same magistrate's seal appeared on forty arrests. Each prisoner had been seized on a market day. Each file listed no witness, no victim, no stolen goods. Only a signature and a sentence. The magistrate had filled the cells to collect the state's prisoner stipend. Forty people. All innocent. All provable. Jessica pressed her hand flat on the page. Her chest went tight. Here was the proof she had hunted for years, and her hands shook too hard to hold it. Then she heard the growl. A massive dog filled the vault doorway. Its black and brown coat bristled along a tense spine. Its lips peeled back from wet teeth, and one yellow eye caught the lamplight. The prison kept it to hunt escapees through the lower tunnels. Jessica knew its handler. She did not know why it ran loose tonight. She stayed low. She did not run. Running was what prey did. She had learned long ago to bend when bending kept her breathing. Slowly, she slid the three ledgers into her coat. The dog advanced, nails clicking stone. "Easy," she whispered. "Easy." It lunged. She threw the lamp. Oil burst across the floor and flame chased it. The dog yelped and recoiled from the fire. Jessica scrambled up the stairs while smoke rolled behind her. Shouts rose in the yard above. The vault was burning, and with it every original file. She hit the night air and did not stop. Three ledgers slapped against her ribs under her coat. In the distance, past the wall, a single tree rose over the valley, so tall its crown glowed with pale drifting pollen. People said one speck could heal any wound. She had never dared go near it. Now she ran toward it, because she needed somewhere the guards would not follow. She had her proof at last. Forty names she could defend to any judge. But the fire would be blamed on her by morning. The vault she had worked six quiet years would be ash. She could no longer hide inside the prison. From tonight, Jessica was a wanted woman carrying the only copy left.
