Chapter 1

Jimmy watched the tavern door, counting faces, calculating debts. His gamblers' den needed the right kind of patrons—the ones with secrets heavier than their coin purses. Tonight would bring another opportunity, another handshake, another thread to add to his web of control. The weathered pirate slid into the chair across from him without asking. He pushed a folded parchment across the scarred table, his calloused finger tapping it twice. "Lefty's Dice Hall," the pirate said, voice rough as barnacles. "Half the smugglers in port pass through those doors. I know who owns the marker on it. Give me safe passage past Killer Jasper's waters, and I'll tell you how to collect." Jimmy let the silence stretch, savoring the desperation in the old salt's eyes. He'd been building toward this—a gambling hall at the heart of the port's underworld. He reached across the table and shook the pirate's hand, feeling the man's relief flood through that grip. "Consider Jasper handled," Jimmy said, already planning which tribute the cursed captain would accept. "Now tell me everything." The pirate's information was simple but valuable. The current owner had gambling debts scattered across three ports, and the deed sat in a locked chest at the hall's uppermost room. One word to the right creditors, and the man would sell for half its worth just to escape with his skin. Jimmy pocketed the parchment and stood, leaving two silver coins on the table—payment for the passage token he'd need from the oracle's cave. The weathered pirate watched him go, probably thinking he'd made a fair trade. But Jimmy knew better. By morning, he'd own the marker on Lefty's Dice Hall, and half the port's smugglers would pass through doors he controlled. Another handshake, another invisible chain. Jimmy stepped outside and breathed in the salt air. The gambling hall's skull-and-crossbones sign loomed three docks over, its red-tiled roof catching the moonlight. He counted the stacks of chips and coin in his mind—enough to buy the deed twice over if needed. The pirate had given him leverage, but Jimmy had given him something better: hope. Hope that Jasper's curse could be managed, that safe passage existed for the right price. Whether that hope proved true didn't matter. The handshake was done. The port's underworld would have a new heart, and Jimmy would be the one making it beat.
