Chapter 1

JiRu Black Iron drew his sword and saw the village burn again in its dull edge. The warlord's men had killed everyone he loved. Now he hunted that warlord across stolen land, and this blade was all he carried to end him. He ran his thumb along the steel. Three deep notches scarred the curve. One hard strike would snap it. He knew this the way he knew his own breath. He needed a new weapon, and he needed it before he found his enemy. He followed smoke to a blacksmith shop with soot-black timbers. Heat rolled from the open forge inside. A woman stood at the anvil, hammer swinging in steady beats. Her arms were thick with old scars. She did not look up when his shadow crossed her floor. "My blade is dying," JiRu said. He laid it on her bench. "I need one that won't break." Thora Ironheart set down her hammer. She lifted his sword, bent it to the light, and frowned at the notches. "Whoever made this gave you honest iron. You spent it fighting something it couldn't handle." She dropped it flat. "I can't save it. I can forge you better. But not with scrap." "Then forge it with your best metal." She laughed once, short and hard. "My best metal killed two men who tried to mine it." She crossed the room and pulled a cloth off a crate. Inside sat a chunk of jagged black ore. Dark veins ran through it like trapped fire, blue and purple, almost alive. "Volcanic. Heavy as sin. Holds an edge no steel can match. I've had it three years. Never found a buyer worth the risk." JiRu stared at the ore. "Name your price." "It's not coin I want." Thora wiped her hands and met his eyes. "That warlord's raiders took my son last spring. Took him for their ranks. I asked soldiers for help. I asked rich men. They all looked away." She nodded at his ruined blade. "You carry the same fire I do. I see it. So here's my bargain. I forge your weapon from this ore. You swear to break that warlord and bring my boy home." He thought of his own dead. He thought of how long a single man lasts against an army. "I can't promise he still lives." "I know." Her voice did not shake. "Promise you'll try." "I swear it." Thora shoved the ore into the coals. The fire turned white where the dark metal touched it. "Then stay. This takes all night, and I'll need your hands on the bellows." She picked up her hammer. "When we're done, you won't be hunting him alone anymore. I'm coming too." JiRu pumped the bellows. The forge roared. For the first time since his village fell, he was not the only one who wanted the warlord dead.
