Chapter 1

Jose Arcadio Buendia grew corn that fed a town he never entered. Every dawn the trucks came for his harvest, and every dawn a new crew of workers waited by his fence. They all had his neighbor's face. Same jaw, same tired hands, same silence. Jose knew then what the town paid for. Not corn. Men, copied and copied, worked until they broke. He wanted to end it. But he had never seen where the copies were made. That morning he loaded a bundle of his strangest crop onto the cart. Corn stalks with dragon fruit bursting from the husks, pink and green and bright. The buyers always wanted it. He tied the bundle tight and rode toward the delivery gate, where the copied workers loaded trucks. He meant to follow one truck to its source. The gate guard waved his cart through without a look. Jose kept his weaved hat low. He drove past the loading dock, past a pen where a cow with thick wool stood chewing, and slipped behind a truck as it rolled out. He walked in its dust for an hour. The road ended at a low gray building with no windows. Inside, cold air hit him. Glass tanks lined the walls. Each held a body curled in green fluid, half-formed, waiting. A woman in a lab coat looked up from a screen. Her glasses caught the light. She did not shout for a guard. "You're the corn man," Dr. Elena Marsh said. She stepped between him and the tanks, as if to shield them. "They said your fruit doesn't grow right anywhere else. Only your soil." Her voice stayed flat, but her hands trembled at her sides. "I came to see what my corn feeds," Jose said. He pointed at the nearest tank. "That has my neighbor's face." "Had," she said. "He died in the fields last spring. So they grew another." She pulled off her glasses and rubbed her eyes. "I built these chambers. I thought I was saving lives. I was making a herd." Jose stared at the rows of tanks. Twenty. Maybe thirty. This was the source. He had found it. But finding it changed nothing by itself. "Shut it down," he said. "I can't," Elena said. "I don't own it. The buyers do. The same ones who buy your corn." She looked at him hard now. "But I know how the chambers work. And you feed everyone who runs this place. Together we could starve it." A bell rang somewhere deep in the building. Elena grabbed his sleeve and pushed him toward a side door. "Go. They count visitors. If they learn you saw this, they'll take your farm and grow a copy of you to work it." Jose ran back to his cart. He knew the source now. He also knew the price of knowing. By nightfall, the buyers would come asking why the corn man went missing for an hour.
