Chapter 1

Josh sprinted toward the smoke while everyone else ran the other way. He had come to the town of Death with one idea: build a brotherhood of firemen strong enough to answer every blaze without losing a soul. Tonight he had no brotherhood. He had two hands, a wet coat, and a market full of stalls burning fast. Flames climbed a shopfront where three people screamed from an upper window. Josh threw his weight against the door. It held. He kicked it. It held. Alone, he could not reach them in time. He grabbed the arm of an old man watching from the crowd. "Help me. There are people up there." The old man had gray hair and a firefighter's jacket with faded yellow stripes. He did not flinch at the heat. He looked at the burning window, then at Josh, and his voice came out calm and sure. "One man dies playing hero. A hundred men move water." This was Hank Stanley, a retired fire marshal. Josh had heard the name in the district. People said he had walked away from the job years ago and never looked back. "Then help me get a hundred men," Josh said. Hank turned to the crowd. He did not ask. He pointed and barked orders like the years had never passed. "You, the well. You, buckets from the market. Two lines, now." People who had frozen suddenly moved. Josh watched a scared crowd become a chain of arms passing water hand to hand. A young man with black hair pushed through with a medical bag over his shoulder. He knelt where a burned woman lay coughing on the stones. "I'm a paramedic. John Gage. Get me anyone you pull out." He worked fast and steady, and Josh trusted him at once. The bucket line reached the shopfront. Josh doused the door and kicked again. This time it broke. He climbed through smoke, found the three trapped people on the stairs, and carried them down one by one. Hank's line kept the fire off his back. John caught each one at the bottom and checked their breathing. All three lived. The market still burned, but the trapped were out. Josh stood in the street, coughing, soaked, alive. He had learned the plain truth of his whole goal in one night. One man could not do this. A line of men could. Hank wiped soot from his mustache and studied Josh with new eyes. "You've got the nerve for this work. You don't have the numbers." He nodded at the crowd already drifting apart. "They came tonight because I yelled. Tomorrow they go back to their lives. You want men who come every time? You build that yourself. And you'll need more than nerve to make me sign on." The fire was beaten. The brotherhood did not exist. Josh now knew exactly who he had to convince first.
