Chapter 1
For three nights, Joyce had felt the universe humming under her skin, and she could not make out a single word of it. She sat on her back step at sixty, dark hair loose to her shoulders, boots still laced. The pulse came in slow waves, like a heartbeat too big to belong to anything alive. She had always sensed things others missed. But this was different. This was a message, and it was meant for her.
A truck coughed past on the road. A dog barked two houses down. A refrigerator hummed inside her kitchen. Each small noise scraped across the signal and tore it apart. Joyce pressed her palms to her ears. It didn't help. The pulse slipped away again, halfway to a shape she almost understood.
"I need somewhere quiet," she said out loud. "Somewhere with no engines and no machines."
A crow landed on her fence. Then a second, a third, until five of them lined the top rail. Their black feathers held faint colors, blue and violet under the porch light. Above each head glowed a small ring of light, one gold, one green, one purple. They did not caw. They watched her with the same tilt of head, all at once, as if a single mind lived behind ten eyes.
Joyce lowered her hands. She felt the pulse move through the birds too. It rippled along the row of them, and their rings brightened in time with it. They felt what she felt. They had come because of it.
The lead crow lifted off and flew a short way, then circled back. It landed, looked at her, and flew the same path again. The others waited. Joyce understood. They wanted her to follow.
She grabbed her coat and went. The crows led her away from the road, past the last house, up a bare hill where no wires ran. At the top stood a single stone, and on the stone rested a crystal orb. Pale light moved inside it. Fine veins branched through the glass like roots, and rings of gold and violet turned slow around its center.
The moment Joyce stepped near it, the noise in her head fell silent. No trucks. No dogs. No hum. Only the pulse, clean and steady, pouring into the orb and glowing there in patterns she could see. The crows settled around the stone and went still.
Joyce knelt and laid her hands on the cold glass. The message came through it whole for the first time, slow enough to follow. She caught the first three beats of it and held them in her mind.
Then the light inside the orb changed. The gentle rings sped up and turned sharp red. A pressure pushed back against her hands, hot and alive, as if something inside had noticed her listening. The pulse was not just a message. Something was sending it. And now it knew her name.
