Juniper grabbed her log and hat. "Show me where," she said. The dog led her outside, past the training center, down a path Juniper had walked a hundred times. They stopped at an old marker stone half-buried in moss. The dog pulled out her oldest map and held it against the stone. The lines matched exactly — same curves, same placement. "This was the first outbreak site," the dog said. "The spiral marked it then. Now it's marking it again." Juniper opened her log and drew the marker's position, noting the moss pattern, the crack in the stone, the way the morning light hit it. She had been reading the leaves correctly after all — they had been showing her a location, not a fortune. The spiral was never meant to stay in the cup. Juniper knelt and touched the stone. It was cold, older than her books, older than the plague. "The leaves were teaching me to look outward," she said. The dog nodded slowly. "What do we do now?" Juniper closed her log and stood. She had spent weeks trying to find meaning in her cup, learning to read patterns that pointed somewhere else entirely. Mastering tasseography meant following what the leaves showed you, even when it led you away from the table. "We watch this spot," Juniper said. "And I keep reading. If the leaves can warn us once, they can warn us again." She had her threshold now — not three correlations, but one clear message she finally understood.
