Chapter 1

Kael Emberheart had killed men without flinching, but the bakery door stopped him cold. He gripped the handle and made himself go in. He wanted one thing more than any battle prize: the pastry chef inside knew a recipe from his lost childhood, a taste he had chased for years. She was the only person alive who could give it back to him. The warm room smelled of butter and honey. A dark-haired elf stood behind the counter, flour dusting her apron, her green eyes fixed on the loaf she was shaping. She glanced up and froze. His black leather armor filled the small space. The sword at his hip did not belong near soft bread and sugar. "You," Kael said. Too loud. His voice was made for shouting orders across a field. "Bread. I need the bread." She flinched. Her hands went still on the dough. The word came out harder than he meant, like a demand instead of a request. Kael saw her fear and hated it. He tried again, softer, but soft was not a thing his mouth knew how to do. "The sweet one. With the—" He waved a scarred hand. "The filling. My mother made it. I don't know the name." The chef said nothing. Silence stretched. Kael's face burned hotter than his red hair. He had faced spears without sweating, and now his palms were wet. He should leave. He was ruining it. Then his hand found the pouch at his belt. He tugged it open and spilled bright hard candies across the counter, red and green and yellow. "Sorry," he muttered. "I'm no good at this. I like sweet things. That's all I meant." He picked one up and popped it in his mouth like a nervous child. The chef stared at the candies. A small sound escaped her. Not fear. A laugh, quick and surprised, hidden behind her hand. Her shoulders dropped an inch. "You eat those," she said softly, "before breakfast?" "Any time," Kael said. "All the time." The corner of her mouth lifted. She reached under the counter and set a small pastry on a napkin. Golden crust, a shine of fruit at its center. "Try this," she whispered. "Tell me if it's close." Kael bit down. Warmth, honey, a tang he had not tasted since he was small. His chest tightened. It was not the right one. But it was near, so near his eyes stung. "Close," he said. His rough voice cracked. "Not it. But close." She met his eyes for the first time, cheeks pink. "Come back tomorrow," she said. "I'll try another." Then she looked down, flustered, and busied her hands with the dough. Kael walked out into the cold air, the candy pouch lighter, a napkin still in his fist. He had stumbled through every word. Yet she wanted him back. Tomorrow he would return, and he would have to find gentler words than a warrior owned.
