Chapter 1

Kael stood at Elainea's door with a string of rabbits over his shoulder, waiting. He'd come twice a week for months now, always with something to offer, never asking for more than she was willing to give. But today she didn't smile when she opened the door. She looked at him with those dark eyes that saw through every pretense, and she asked the question he'd known would come eventually. "Why do you keep coming back?" Her voice was quiet, but it cut clean through the space between them. Kael shifted the rabbits on his shoulder and met her gaze without flinching. "Because you haven't told me to stop," he said. "And because I'm hoping." She went still then, that listening stillness he'd noticed so many times before, and something shifted in her expression. "Walk with me," she said, and turned toward the path that led to the pond beneath the old willow. He followed without a word, his heart steady even as everything began to change. At the water's edge she stopped and turned to face him. "I need to know if you mean it," she said. Kael set the rabbits down on a flat stone and stepped closer. "I mean it," he said. "I've meant it since the first time I saw you go still like that, like you were listening to the whole forest at once." She reached for the bow leaning against the willow's trunk, her fingers tracing the carved antler limbs. "This was my mother's," she said. "She told me I'd know the right person when they saw what mattered, not just what they wanted." She didn't look away. For the first time in all these months, she didn't look away. "Then keep coming," she said, and her mouth curved just slightly at the corner. "But next time, come empty-handed." He pulled the ring from his pocket, the one with the blue stone he'd been carrying for weeks, and placed it on the stone beside the rabbits. She picked it up, held it to the light, then slipped it onto her finger. "Empty-handed," she repeated, and this time she smiled. Kael nodded once, leaving everything behind as he walked back toward the village. The ground beneath him had shifted, and she'd finally let him see it.
