Chapter 1

Kaelen wanted one thing gold could not buy: to kneel before Princess Sayir and lay a conquered continent at her feet. But first he had to end the rebellion burning through his desert trade routes. The Ash-Sun Legion had crushed kings. Now a ragtag warband of raiders threatened the empire he meant to gift her. He stood on a dune above their camp at dawn. Bronze scales lined his jaw and arms, catching the first light like hot metal. His golden eyes narrowed to slits. Below, the raiders had blocked the caravan road with wagons and spears. They meant to bleed him slowly, one convoy at a time. Kera Flameheart reined her horse beside him. She was his sister by dragon blood and his most trusted commander, small in the saddle but never soft. Her curved sword already hung loose in her hand. "They think the sand hides them," Kera said. She grinned up at him. "Burn it, and there's nothing left to march on Wraithfyre with. You promised her a full treasury, not ash." Kaelen understood the warning. His fire could melt their camp in seconds. It would also melt the gold he needed. He wanted to arrive at Sayir's court rich, not empty-handed. "No fire," he said. His voice rumbled low in his chest. "We take them alive. We take their leaders. Then the routes stay open." He pointed Kera and half the legion around the eastern ridge. He led the rest straight down the dune. The raiders loosed arrows. The shafts snapped against his hardened scales and fell into the sand. Kaelen reached their line and did not breathe fire. He seized the first wagon and flipped it, scattering men. His fists broke shields. His body threw heat that made the raiders stagger back, sweating, unable to close. Kera hit them from behind. Her sword cut down the spearmen who tried to flee. The raiders were caught between the sister and the monarch, and they had nowhere to run. Within an hour the desert warband threw down its weapons. Kaelen dragged their leader before him by the collar. The man expected fire. Instead Kaelen spared him and named his price: the trade routes stay open, and tribute flows to the legion. The man, alive and shaking, agreed. By nightfall the caravans rolled again. Kera's soldiers loaded chest after chest of gold onto the wagons. The empire was secure. The routes were his. Nothing now stood between Kaelen and Wraithfyre. "So you march to lay it all at her feet," Kera said. She rested a boot on a heavy chest. "You'd kneel to this princess you've never even met." "I would give her more than gold," Kaelen said. He looked west, toward Wraithfyre. "I would give her the legion. The bloodline. Everything." At dawn the wagons turned toward the coast. Kaelen rode at their head, a warlord carrying his life's conquest as a courtship gift, betting everything on a woman who did not yet know he was coming.
