Chapter 2

The chip sits on the workbench where Kaelynn left it, components spread open under the lamp. She's halfway through cataloging the neural pathways when the knock comes again. Three taps, then two. Twice in one night means something broke in the network. She opens the door to find Piper standing in the alley, one hand braced against a pile of broken planks tangled with wire. The girl is out of breath. Kaelynn knows what that means before Piper speaks. She ran here. Piper holds out a credit chip, cracked along one edge, and Kaelynn takes it. The screen reads zero. Piper says four children collapsed at the market. Medical won't come to Level 13 without payment up front. She spent everything she had on food to keep them alive until morning. Now she needs Hope's warehouse node. She needs a medic who doesn't ask for credits first. Kaelynn turns the chip over in her hand. Hope's location is compartmentalized for a reason. If Piper gets caught, if Valor grabs her in their territory, the whole cell burns. But the children are real. The hunger is real. Piper didn't come here to manipulate her. She came because she had nowhere else to go. Kaelynn built The Library for exactly this. She walks to the back of the toll booth, past the stacks of books that line the concrete walls, and pulls out a scrap of paper. She writes the address and the knock sequence. Three taps, one pause, two taps. She hands it to Piper and tells her to memorize it, then burn it. Piper nods. Kaelynn watches her disappear into the alley, carrying the address that connects two cells that were never supposed to know about each other. Kaelynn locks the door and returns to the workbench. The behavioral chip still sits there, half-disassembled. But the network just changed shape. Two cells now share a thread. If one falls, the other is exposed. She built The Library to grow, but growth means risk. She picks up her tools and gets back to work. The children will live. The network will adapt. That's what it was designed to do.
